FRSC warns against overloading school buses

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Osun State, Mr. Mohammed Hussaini, has warned that his men would no longer allow school buses to be overloaded with pupils.
The sector commander said this on Wednesday in Ilesa during an interview with our correspondent on the sidelines of a programme organised by the Ilesa Unit of the FRSC to commemorate this year Children’s Day.
Hussaini, who said many school buses were always overloaded with pupils, especially toddlers added that this would no longer be allowed.
He said, “Many schools are in the habit of overloading their buses with pupils, especially those very young ones. They pack them like sardines and you will wonder why they are not treating these kids like normal human beings.
“They are human beings like the adults. They should not be subjected to that kind of treatment because they are kids. It is not alright and we will not allow this anywhere in the state. “
He, however, commended Governor Rauf Aregbesola for complying with the directive of the FRSC by ensuring that school buses of the state’s public schools were painted glossy yellow.
He rated Osun State the best in terms of compliance with the directive and lauded the governor, who, he said, led by example.
He urged those who might not have complied with the directive of colour of school buses to do so without further delay.
The sector commander said, “The glossy yellow has an attention-grabbing quality. It can be noticed quickly and faster than any other colours. I am happy that the governor laid a good example by ensuring that all school buses were painted yellow before they started using them.”
The commander, FRSC Ilesa Unit, Mr. Arinze Igwe, said the commission organised the ceremony and invited pupils from private and public schools to allow them to imbibe culture of safety.
He said some parents carry their children on their laps while driving, saying this was wrong and should be stopped.
The Executive Secretary of Ilesa West, Mr. Azeez Oyesiji, decried the increasing rate of crime against children. He appealed to security agencies in the country to do more to ensure the safety of children in the country.
